Tommy is one of many 8-year-olds in Virginia Beach looking forward to his first day back to school on September 3rd. Like many of his classmates, Tommy is excited about seeing his friends again after the summer they spent away from school. He can’t wait to tell his friends about the camp he went to, the fish he caught with his grandpa, and the days he spent at the fun park.

Tommy’s favorite subject in school is science because he loves looking at the way things work. At his last visit to the fun park, Tommy started to wonder what makes the ferris wheel turn and what makes the roller coaster go so fast. He remembered his cousin showing him a little car he built out of wood, strings, and syringes and tommy wondered if they would be able to build the same thing in his science class. The thought of being able to build his own wooden car excited him and he can’t wait to get back to school.

Virginia Beach is not just a place. It is a community that we are proudly part of and it’s a significant part of who we are. Ynot Italian invests in local schools and missions that are dedicated to providing opportunities for children to achieve their education and career goals. Fostering leadership, empowering students, and immersing students in literature and reading are all pieces of the vision that Ynot Italian has for the Virginia Beach community.

Ynot Educate is a non profit dedicated to providing educational grants for elementary and middle schools in Virginia Beach. The education of Virginia Beach youth has always been a priority for Ynot Italian and we will continue to invest in the youth and our community.

Food insecurity is a great barrier for many kids attending schools. That’s why Ynot Italian is happy to contribute to programs like Beach Bags by VB Schools through Ynot Wednesdays to ensure that kids have enough food to get them through their school day.

Over the summer months, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD) collects new books for children between the ages of 6 months and 10 years for their Reach Out and Read program. This amazing program helps to teach parents how to use these books to support their childrens’ healthy development.

Getting the kids ready for the first day

The back to school season can be quite stressful for parents as well. We’ve put together some tips (and maybe reminders) below to help you get your kids ready for their first day back.

Tip #1: Bring your child to the doctor for his/her regular check-up visit.

Tip #2: Ask your child if they they are needing anything different for this school year. Your son or daughter will probably remember is their raincoat

Tip #3: Wake up early to ensure your family has enough time to get dressed, have breakfast, and commute to school.

Tip #4: Plan your meals ahead of time – take advantage of specials and coupons available to help alleviate the stress of getting dinner prepared for your family after a long day. Tip #5: Agree on a designated homework station, a set time and place every day for your child to finish their homework.
